Last Lunch Visit @ Enumclaw High School

I made myself go into work today. This is my "last time" of a lot of different Outreach experiences this week and I don't want to miss them. Today was my last high school lunch visit. A lunch visit is when a college rep goes into a high school and sets up a table with a tablecloth with the college logo (as in the picture) and lots of college information etc. Students come to the table at lunch and ask questions regarding the college. I see many seniors that haven't made a decision after graduation at this time of the year. It could also be the last time I set foot into a high school for a long time. I felt a little twinge of sentiment as I looked over my shoulder as I left the building for one last look.

I have spent so much of my working life in a high school. The clothes change, and the fads, but the kids... they are the same. I have always been able to relate to high school kids. I really enjoyed talking to the students today. I have also been thinking back over the years I worked in high schools. I began working with high school students in 1984 in various positions. When I came to Washington I started at Kent Meridian HS working in Special Education and then as the Career Specialist. It was when Kari (my daughter) was a teenager that I decided to apply to the community college. Basically, teenagers were everywhere in my life then... home and work etc.

When I started working in Outreach, I was able to go back into the high schools and work with the career specialists that I had known years earlier. I didn't realize when I moved on to the college that I would end up back into the high schools. It is amazing how things come about.

I am looking forward to see what is next.
